Sports in Munich in 2012: A Year of Competition

Munich is a city well known for its art and architecture as well as its intellectual and financial prowess. However, Munich is also a dynamic city for sports of all kind both for spectators and participants. In 2012 Munich hosts a full roster of sporting-related events and activities.
With events as near to the city as the Hilton Munich Park or as far away as a quiet suburb, sporting events can be found anywhere.

Ending on the 1st of January was the Winter Sports Festival kick starting the competitive year as well as the thrill of the AUDI FIS Ski World Cup. Later in January is the TUI fireworks and the Art of Gymnastics, an exhibition of the skill and athleticism that defines the world of professional gymnasts. In April, sport in Munich really gets going: the Sport Scheck Running Event gathers running enthusiasts from around Europe and the globe to perfect their sport; the Night of the Jumps displays the heart-throttling skills of Motocross Freestyle; the greatly anticipated BMW Open Tennis Tournament is played; the MRRC City Triathlon takes place; and finally, the AOK Bladenight gathers all inline skaters out for a midnight stroll. The city’s annual half-marathon takes place in May as does the Women’s Champions League Final, Horse International, Men’s Cup Champion League Final, and the German Special Olympics competition. After packing a late spring of sports in, the athletic year is finalized with the Munich Marathon in October.

Munich is clearly the place to be is you love to watch sport, but also if you want to be involved too. From a variety of sporting teams and clubs, to simply having access to great places to run, it is a fantastic city to become an expert in athleticism. Even if simply visiting and staying somewhere such as the Hilton Munich is an ideal location of seeing a sport new to you or perfecting something you already know. No matter what you itinerary, getting a little sport-watching in will be easy to do on a visit.
